Time and distance, they say, change your perspective on things. But in the case of Fiona Apple, who releases here first album since 2005's Extraordinary Machine in the form of 2012's The Idler Wheel the prospect is still as excellent as ever.
Music Review//Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel.
It's lucky word count is not a huge issue here as the title of Fiona Apple's latest would take take up a large chunk of it were space a problem. Said luxury allowed then The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than The Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Ever Do is the usual relaxed yet itchy underneath excellence we've come to expect from Ms Apple.
The wise and witty lyrics are present and correct and the jazzy arrangements are still as entertaining as ever and for that we are to thankful. Just as previously wounds are opened with the grace of a stanza and persons analysed with words that are as scathing as they are beautifully formed. Overall though the tone seems mellower with simpler arrangements than the sonically multi layered aspects of previous work at play as her voice moves in ways we've not heard before such as the tortured cries of Left Alone or the off-kilter nursery rhyme rhythms of Every Single Night.
On Periphery we get the traditional scornful words and rough edged piano melodies that characterize her best work whilst album closer Hot Knife uses minimalist percussion to create a perfect layer for Apple's sweet yet twisted words. Her comparison of herself to butter to her mans Hot Knife is a clever one that rounds off an album worthy of many listens perfectly indeed. Roll on the next release !
